RRM turbo installed....sort of
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:51:53 PM »
Ok, so installed the turbo this weekend. For the most part, everything went well. A few issues that ill address with RRM, but here's whats up (and feel free to drop some knowledge). Car started and ran fine, lowered the car, it rain fine. Disengaged the ebrake.....car sputtered and died. Started again, sputtered and died. Engaged the ebrake, idled and ran fine.

So I checked my piggyback connections, which required unplugging the ecu. Everything looked fine except for one questionable thing, but its hooked up according to the instructions.

Started it back up, ran fine ebrake engaged or disengaged...woohoo right? So I took it for through the learning procedure listed by RRM. Drive around for 15-20 minutes under 3000 rpms. ( it says no boost, but it also said under 3000rpms, problem is, it starts getting boost before 3000, so I did hit boost so may be something here?)

Everything went fine on the slow roll around town for 20 minutes. Next up according to RRM, some boosted pulls up to 4500, and here's where it goes downhill. I give it some gas, not full throttle, but a 1/2 to 3/4, starts boosting beautifully, but then around 4000rpms it cuts out, almost like you're hitting a speed limiter, it kinda gives the gas back, but not really, then nothing other then a rough idle and it throws a code ( Ill have to see if I can get it scanned ). Shut it off, and turn it back on, its fine. I can drive it around town under 4000 rpms all day long, but past the it kills the car. It's sunday and its late, so I can't call the RRM guys until tomorrow, but my guess is the programming in the piggyback. Then again, im not perfect.

Thoughts?

...By the way, Im going to post this on other forums as well to see what other thoughts come up, so dont be surprised to see the is elsewhere.

its most likely the piggy bag.
try not to boost with it at all.
its really bad for the engine if its doing that
let alone the piggy back aint tuned properly.
do you have any parts that was left over form the install?

Thats kinda what i was thinking.

Here's another interesting tidbit though that makes me wonder if somethings wrong with the vacuum. If im at a stop, out of gear (no load on the engine) I can rev over 4 thousand rpm's. It seems like its a problem coming from being in boost. Also, I have no vacuum line running to from the top of the wastegate. ( long story ) Now, If there is supposed to be something either going to that or coming from that. I don't know where it would come from/go to, because my instructions were missing pages..........

Dont really have any parts left over. Here's the deal, I don't want to throw RRM under the bus, so Im not going to mention much, but I was actually missing some things, and part of the instructions.

Till I get this figured out, itll be slow, low rpm driving only too and from work. Wish it was a lil nicer so I could take the bike.

Few things here...
#1, check for leaks.  If the car is not getting the proper air flow that it is expecting, problems will occur.
#2, do you have guages?  What is your afr under idle/partial/full throttle?
#3, the ebrake thing made me think that the piggy is hooked up wrong.  Do all of your other electronic components work as intended?
#4, should have gotten a dyno tune!  Sorry, I had to.  None of that "learning" stuff involved.  Dial it in to the right AFR's, set the correct boost, and get some solid numbers to post.  Plus, they are usually very good at noticing if something went wrong with install.  Look into it...

Checked for leaks, there is a slight exhaust leak which is expected from heating up and expanding/contracting. Just need to tight that area down. Other that than nothing that any of us have found.

Interestingly, watching serious08's video from his install, the top nipple on his wastegate seems to have had nothing run to it either, so that might kill my wastegate being incorrectly hooked up theory.

I ordered defi gauges and a wideband, for some reason they still haven't shipped yet. So no i dont have guages yet. ( I know, big no no) Unfortunately, this was the best time for me to install it as the garage I am using is not always available.

The ebrake thing made me think the same thing, but now that its gone i dont know. EVERYTHING matches up with what the instuctions say, down to the colors and everything, aside from one. It says to connect to a black wire at pin 72, but the wire at pin 72 is black and red. I haven't had a chance to call RRM about this yet as it was sunday, but will ask them today.

Getting it tuned is still and all always has been an option. Only reason I bought this kit is because of the good reviews I have read and heard about it fom serious and others and it would allow me to run right out of the box and then bring it to get tuned and such from there. Im not out here looking to run at full boost everywhere I go. I've got a bike if I really want speed, but I wanted to add some pep to the car.

Im not really sure how the price is going to effect how it runs.

Bought the kit for 4300 from RRM

Alright, so the code was P1241.

From what I read its a code that has come up with a number of other turbo'd lancers and even evo's.

However after talking with RRM and going through and re doing my vacuum lines and securing them, it seems that I've corrected the error. From talking with RRM it seems the vacuum line going into the Piggyback needs to be very secure, so I zip tied everything tight and it seems to have corrected that particular issue.

There are still some creaks and what not and some parts that need to be adjusted (rubbing on other parts under load and such), normal things that need to be done on an install like this. And still some oddities. I can boost now, however, on one of the couple runs I did, I boosted through a couple gears and then let off and the car died.....

Im going to go through and correct and re tighten things as needed, all the normal procedure, and then I think Im going to redo the relearning procedure. If the ECU learned under a bad vacuum, its possible the ECU didn't accurately learn. I'll update as things improve and take pics when i can. I appreciate all the input/help and the props to the setup.
