Yep, thanks for posting that. I've never noticed any problem like it describes, but I'll ask my dealership about it next time I'm out there. Better to be safe than sorry.

I've had zero problems, but I'll still go to the dealer and have him fix that. Any time I can get something replaced for free I do it. ;)

So far I've gotten my throttle body, instrument cluster bezel, window weather stripping, and my tires replaced for free.  ;D

It could be, but it also says: UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS (VERY SLOW VEHICLE MANEUVERS), THERE MAY BE INSUFFICIENT INITIAL BRAKING ASSIST.

So more than likely it would only happen at low speed, and hopefully you could avoid a crash in such a situation.
I'd still advise everyone to inquire with their dealership about it and get it fixed since it will be free.

Wait... only LOW speed? I'm never at a low speed. I'm either 90mph or stop. No middle ground. I'm safe. YAY! ;)

and if you happend to be at a low speed, and you can't steer out of it, and you have a wreck, then don't buy a lancer. we have top notch handling, kinda LOL, and if you hit something at low speeds then you're gay.  now if you hit something going kinda fast, then thats different. i almost hit a deer coming home from my g/f's house last night, but my breaks stoped me really quickly from 65 :D lots of tire smoke tho!

I talked to an engineer at MMNA about this and he said that if you feel you're affected by the problem and as a temporary workaround: When you turn the car on, hold the RPM between 1500-2000 for about a minute, which should force the check valve open (obviously, get it fixed as soon as you can).  Most dealerships don't even know about this recall yet nor do they have the parts to fix it as of right now.

Even though it only effects the car at low speeds and it doesn't sound super serious, remember that ABS only kicks in above 15 MPH.  So you could be potentially put in a situation where your stopping distance is increased - so you step on the brake pedal harder than normal; which makes your wheels lock up...ooops, no ABS! - then...BAM! - you slide into the car in front of you.

I don't have ABS :D. hate it... once the abs goes, brakes work a lot better anyway stopping power. and i know on my grand prix, if you slammed on the brake pedal, it disabled abs automatically. Honestly, i can't see brakes locking up at low speed, and making you skid. i just cant picture that. I mean if its wet out, but if its really dry?? i guess it is possible.

uhmmmmm... the issue is that there is "insufficient" brake assist from the power brake system.  Not with the ABS not working.  Insufficient brake assistance would mean you wail the f* out of the brake pedal but the car keeps going because there isn't enough force to stop it... Meaning it's REALLY difficult to get your brakes to lock and activate the ABS to begin with...

uhmmmm.... Physics says you're wrong for most cases.  The coefficient of sliding friction for tires on asphalt is much lower than the coefficient of static friction on asphalt.  Once the coefficient of static friction has been exceeded the amount of energy required to keep a sliding vehicle in motion is greatly reduced.

The only time locking the brakes up will actually stop you in a shorter distance than not locking them up is if you're on deep soft sand, and that's because the sand piles up in front of the tires to help shorten the stopping distance.

Only very poorly designed ABS systems make you stop in a longer distance than locking your brakes does.

to the best of my knowledge, all North American Lancers are assembled in Japan.

I was wondering if you guys contact the dealership or they contact you

I called up mitsubishi and they told me that the recall isn't out yet so it's not in their system.  He then told me to wait a week or so and call back with my VIN number to see if it affects me.  Recall is expected for April 09 so I'd wait another week or so

I bought mine used from carmax. I wonder if I'll get a letter if my car is on the list.
This is my signature. I currently have none. I hope you have enjoyed my non-signature.

I went to my dealership as well today and not only had they not heard anything much beyond the fact that there was one but when they punched my VIN # into the system nothing came up.

Eh.. Who knows.. I was in high hopes I could pawn off my fender-bender on the faulty brakes but it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer and see.

Lets hope.. An RA bumper would be nice, I'd shell out the extra cash for it.

i jjust got off the phone with mitsubishi. they said my car isn't part of the recall. that its only 1% of the lancers. and i swear it feels like it. they should just change it to be on the safe side, or ill contact a dealer about it. and i also asked about the window rattle, which i thought could be caused by my door speaker cuz it sounds wierd at times, but not like a window rattle. and they said thats not part of it. that my car was built in march of 08.

I called my dealer today, the Service advisor asked my VIN# and checked their computer. He said it is not part of the recall.

So I brought in my car today for an oil change, after the Service advisor punched in the VIN#, immediately there's a BIG BOLD RED comment about the recall. The dealer will order the parts and he will let me know once it is in. Also, he showed me the cars they have in stock that they are perfroming the recall. He said it will just take 15-20mins.

Hey guys,

I just happened to receive the recall letter in the mail today.

If I received the letter that has my name and VIN on it, would that mean my Lancer is definately in need of the recall?

Since there wasn't anything specifying a certain group of VIN numbers, I assumed that all were in need to be recalled.
I already made an appointment for tomorrow morning to bring it in, but if there is a possibilty that my car doesn't need to be recalled, is there a way of finding out without having to waste the time taking it in if I don't have to?

I just received a letter about the recall, I'll bring mine in this Saturday.  Should I be worried about my lowering springs and Exhaust?  Has anyone fixed theirs with this setup?  I hope they don't give me any problem with my mods :(.

Also should I go to where I bought the car or I can go to any dealer?  Thanks.

Hah, the dealership, about a month ago, after we'd known about the recall for over a few weeks, told me there was no recall on my car and hasn't been one issued.

I just got my letter in the mail today. Suckers. See if I can't get my front bumper fixed over this.

I'm going to call their service hotline today, prior to heading over to talk to the a-holes at the stealership, to see if I can get them to possibly cover my bumper since I couldn't stop in time from 35f*knmph in 3 car lengths.

I hope it works out for you man. As I see it, if a defective part on the car led directly to the car being damaged they should cover it.
They probably won't see it that way since they have no proof that that's how or why the bumper got damaged, but it doesn't hurt to try and get them to see it your way.  ;D

I'll try.

It certainly doesn't help that we didn't report it or do an insurance claim. God knows it will only cost $200 to fix it so there's no point in blowing my $500 deductable on it.

The only proof I have is the -one- eye witness in the guy I hit since we're good friends.

My car was one of the unfortunate to have some braking issues. It only would happen after the car sat for a while. [overnight & only when it was cold outside(40F and below)] So after sitting for a while, when you stated driving it again, at the first stop of the day there would be a delay for the brakes to respond and then all of the sudden they would grab the disc and you would make a abrupt stop. Luckily I never got in any accident but i was a nuisance for it to happen everyday during winter. I am glad the recall was started.

Just sent the car to the first (20k km) service. My girlfriend took the car to service, but as I understood from her - they have to do something with the brakes to (obviously due to the problem mentioned in the 1st post)... I don't get it - WHY THE F*** THEY DIDN'T ASK ME TO COME TO THE SERVICE TO CHECK THIS ???|huh|

all they do is replace the vacuum check valve , on outside $5 part ( dealer probably $20 ), takes 5 minutes to replace. could have saved lots of us from wrecking if the part worked right in first place.

Tires have their own warranty, and there was never a recall on them, but if you have the defective Dunlops you should be able to get them replaced as long as they have less than 10,000 miles on them.  My dealership ordered new Dunlops from TireRack and put them on and it solved the problem for me, but some people may need an alignment after getting them replaced.

My car wasn't included in the recall for the check valve, so I didn't have to take it in for that at least.  :)

as far as blaming the tires for the pulling situation, I would think if they where defective it wouldn't be a common theme . the fact is that the tires are great at first then start problems when worn in. Also a fact we all hear is alignment, yes there is a problem. The alignment on our cars is set at -1 Degrees camber ,if adjusted car will handle like a truck. So reguardless of what tires we put on our car WE will have tire wear, pulling to one side or other, But we will have great handling and steering response.

If you haven't received a letter from mitsubishi about this by now I wouldn't worry about it. I got my letter about four months ago and did my recall about a month after that. Not all lancers are subject to the recall.

If you haven't received a letter from mitsubishi about this by now I wouldn't worry about it. I got my letter about four months ago and did my recall about a month after that. Not all lancers are subject to the recall.

Yup, but when in doubt, it doesn't hurt to call your dealership and check.   |azn|

True, you could also check out your VIN number and the date that your car was made. I believe that somewhere in the original post it said when the cars were produced that were affected. And you can find this date on the little sticker on the frame when you open your drivers door :P

I ask this, cause...here in Europe, we dont have the same recall...i think...cause - as i know -  all our lancers are made in Japan! That it means if your lancers are assempled in North America...and not in Japan, something was gone wrong....there...Just i would know that...

Nope, most of ours (as far as I know) are made in Japan.

As a result from this member of this "projectlancer.net" club http://forums.projectlancer.net/topic/7265942/1/#new which have "ralliart" model the US customers (probably and you.....? ) their models assembled in North America! His serial number start from "JA..." and not from "JMB..." as all Japan models!

Take a look to yours...just for the history...

Mitsubishi has one plant in the US, in Illinois; it only produces Eclipses, Endeavors and Gallants.

Different cars for different market, different laws and restrictions.. It could be a number of things.

It wouldn't hurt... Ask your dealer to show you what work has been done on the car including warranty and recall repairs. They should be able to run your VIN and tell you if the service was done or not.
