Trailer Hitch?
« on: March 12, 2012, 05:42:30 PM »
Sorry if this is in the wrong section wasn't sure where to put it.

I ride motocross and usually have a pickup however with gas prices going I got the lancer, But I still have a
4x8 trailer I used to tow in my Jetta. So with all this nice weather I'm thinking its time to invest in a trailer hitch.
Does anyone have and whats your opinion of it? I'm hoping to find a nice hidden one, or maybe if I'm lucky one of the types that is hidden behind the bumper.

I googled and found this, I'm guessing they would fit an 09 if they fit a 2011, assuming they're legit for that.

http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2011_Mitsubishi_Lancer.htm

I do not have any experience towing with cars, only trucks so I can't say much about these.

I thought it said in the manual our cars aren't meant for towing anything.

it isnt recommended, but there is a limit to how much they can handle

Yep,
My jetta was the same way but the tongue weight of the trailer and my bike is like 100 pounds.
The most Ive ever had it on my jetta (smaller shocks and motor) was about 500 pounds on a 250 pound trailer.
No issues

Im just trying to find one that will be relatively hidden ya know?

I wouldnt trust that with my skis
It holds all the tongue weight on a pin, If there were two or three pins i might trust that more lol, plus I think its over priced for what it is Hidden hitch is pretty well hidden I geuss got them sending pics

I have a tow bar on my Lancer. Here in Australia I am allowed to tow 500kg trailer without brakes and 1 tonne with brakes.

My tow bar is hidden with the tongue removed. Normally they cut the bottom of the rear bumper bar to clear for the tongue. I fitted a 6mm spacer to the tongue which made it clear the rear bar.

With a DE it would be pretty sketchy towing . At least with a GTS you have more torque, displacement and bigger brakes from the outlander  . Be careful man.

Not bashing just letting him know the facts . Although I don't like the way DE's look stock, lol.

its more of how the transmission will handle it. adding all that weight will put stress on it whether it be manual or cvt

This is true . However I always heard manuals do a better at handling the heat that comes with towing . CVT's would probably get way to hot. Especially models without the cooler.

let me rephrase that.

Anything that is not a Manual or a GTS is a piece of s**t. My Manual GTS gets great gains from simple bolt ons, looks better, is faster, better gas mileage, can tow more and its just a better car than your CVT or base model Lancers.

There we are, cherio.

I would have to agree with you there my GTS definitely does get more power from simple bolt ons, does look better then a stock DE and can probably tow more then a base Lancer. Although I'm not sure if my gas mileage is any better.

If I was worried about that though, I would have bought a camry hybrid.

Thanks for the insight Moodster. I can tell your name refers to your P.M.S .

my opinion: dont judge the different sub models if you havent owned or driven both.

now, back on topic please,
to OP, i would try and tow what you need for a couple miles and see how it handles before going out tyoo far and risking something overheating or possibly harming the transmission.

I'm not towing anymore weight then my car would have if all seats were filled with people hitch is 20 lbs trailer is 230 bike is 200 riding gear is another 20 altogether 470lbs or three people in my car.
I'm not sure why people dog the base models I think its a great vehicle and gets the job done
if you want to have a theoretical debate on how great the GTS is at towing versus a dodge cummins I'm sure theses would be a different tone from some guys on here.
however the fact of the matter is it just doesn't matter.
the GTS has more power and better and suspension. but I could not afford one new nor did the delaership have one worth buying at the price. So I have the DE and I will tow with it and will be happy because no one in their right mind would engine brake with the cvt or beat the hell out of it with the extra weight...

sorry for the tirade but I think its rediculous how a thread looking for hidden hitches on my car turns into a p&%sing match dogging the base models.

I find it funny too ,especially since they say gts has more power , some forget the 2.0 was gts engine first couple years . Also suspension is similiar , but gts has sway bars were base doesnt and when towing they dont help much .
to obtain a copy of Factory service manual  2008,2009,2010,& 2011 Includes Lancer,Sportback,RalliArt & Evo . I am selling them
Pm me for  way to acquire .
