Help me decide

Thanks for the support here.  This will help me decide which of the three intakes I've narrowed it down to.

K&N drop-in with the RA intake duct is my vote. I had the Takeda and sold it. Noise wasn't to my taste, and the difference in performance between the two is minor. After having the drop-in for a while now I think I actually have harder pull in the top end than with the Takeda. My 1/50 of a $.

EDIT: If WA has CA smog laws and it's a concern go with the Typhoon or drop-in. They are both smog legal.

Yeah, the CAI was my first pick, but as ya said... rain.

Are you planning to go swimming in the car? - I have and had CAIs in two cars (01 Cavalier - by RK Sport, 10 GTS Sprtbk by Injen) over the last 10 years and never had a problem with rain/water in Toronto area, although it rains quite a bit here - No hydrashields installed, both with conical K&N filters. Also, have a Dinan CAI in my 530i as well. Never had issues with emissions, yes Ontario is not CA.

I did service the filters I used by washing them up and re-soaking in filter oil every year. These are not service free filters.

Also, have installed a SRI (08 SX4 by RRM) in my wife's car, but only because there was no CAI available at the time. - Not too impressed, as underhood air is too hot and not as dense to help out engine in gaining power. Never the less, SRI is better than restricted OEM box, but my choice will always be with CAI.

Takeda 2.4L with 4g69 throttle body and RA duct... I have had both the k&n panel filter and Takeda with this setup and, IMO, the Takeda pulls harder (esp below 3500 rpms)... the Takeda is louder, but not in a bad way.

not sure if i would do a throttle body, but deff a RA duct tho

Well i'm not sure what the difference in weather is compared to Toronto but driving around here for 1-2 hours in the highway when its raining  will cause engine lights to go off...and cai will suck up a ton of water even with hydra shield on. The cons def outweighs the pros.

For you I would say panel filter.  Several of the larger tuners I've seen for the Lancer (like works) use the panel filter because most of the gains from an intake come from altering the a/f ratio, which based on your adjusting of the mivec maps, I'm sure you're going to do anyways.  For the general user I would say Takeda, but would lean away fron Injen because I understand they bypass the MAF with some of the air, which could ultimately cause you to run too lean and damage your engine.  Just my two cents.

How funny. We have both had the same two setups, except for the TB, and had different conclusions. Maybe that makes the difference? For me, the kind of spirited driving I do in the mountains and canyons, I keep the engine in a high RPM range and seems to me that the pull is better in the high range with the drop-in.

Thanks for all the feedback folks.  I've decided on the panel filter to start with, then the typhoon if I'm not happy with the panel.  Worst case I can stick the panel in the wife's car.

Qualifications were CA emissions legal, with a full air shield, and a reasonable noise level.  So that counted out a number of intakes.

Really, I'd have liked to have made a CAI, but CARB compliance is a lot of work & cash.

I wouldn't be opposed to a new TB, if I can find one for a reasonable price.

Takeda and use the cars air vent like so;

That way, you have the best of both worlds! Cold air coming in and a shorter pipe + you don't have to worry about rain and all that craziness.
